About Pauline

Personally

I went to South Africa for the first time in 2000 and fell totally in love with the country the moment I saw the red earth from the plane.

I am passionate about South Africa, the bush and South African mammals. I spend time walking in the bush every year. Voluntary conservation work is a major joy and fulfilment. Watching and learning about nature, especially mammals, enriches my life and work.

My first trip to SA was a walking trail in the Imfolosi wilderness, KwaZulu Natal, where I return whenever I can. Walking for seven days, no mobiles or watches, carrying all we need between us, we sleep under the stars unless there is rain. We take turns at night doing night watch round a fire. Night watch is a tremendous responsibility. You are in the dark, in a wild place watching and listening for signs of predators whilst everyone else sleeps under your care. Ostensibly alone in the dark, It is a time of heightened awareness and tuning in to oneself. It can bring about profound soul facing experiences.

I am in the process of setting up the Wildheart Foundation, a charity to support children effected by HIV and AIDS in South Africa and Kenya in the context of the healing of nature and rural communities. This is a heartfelt issue for me.
